VPS setup, self-hosting and moving off AWS
Short answer
I set up a VPS to run your application on your own server and cut costs by moving it off AWS managed services. At Qrispy I moved AWS managed services to a VPS. For smaller projects I also deploy with Railway and Neon. We decide together which one fits your needs.
What I do
- VPS setup and deploying an application with self-hosting
- Cost-cutting moves from AWS managed services to a VPS
- Fast deployment with Railway and Neon
- Domain and production environment setup
VPS or managed service
Managed services handle setup and maintenance for you, but their cost can grow with traffic and usage. A VPS keeps cost predictable, but maintaining the server becomes your responsibility. For a small or mid-sized product, a VPS can make sense when the cost difference is large. Before deciding, I listen to your needs and explain both paths.
My experience
- Qrispy: moved AWS managed services to a VPS and reduced costs.
- Qrispy: built the backend with NestJS, TypeORM and MySQL.
- Deployments with Railway and Neon on several projects.
Questions
- Is moving from AWS to a VPS always cheaper?
- No. The difference can be large when traffic is low or predictable and you use only a few managed services. With heavy, spiky traffic a managed service may be a better fit. I decide by looking at your current bill.
- Will there be downtime during the move?
- My aim is no downtime. I prepare and test the new environment, move the data, then switch over.
- Do you also maintain the server?
- I do the setup and explain how to maintain it. We can discuss ongoing maintenance separately.
